Stereotyping homework
Gypsy
the image stereotypes gypsy’s in a negative way, showing they are stupid, nothing more then fortune tellers, scruffy, ‘rip offs’
the fact that the other women in the picture has her purse on her lap can symbolize that gypsy’s are ‘money grabbing’
We see gypsy’s as travelers, live in caravans, lower class, not very popular within the population,

The video however is showing the gypsy’s living live the way they do. Even though we may still see them in quite a negative light, they seem to be happy within themselves and in there lives personally. Showing the amounts they tend to spend on these extravagant weddings proves a point to us that they aren’t as ‘poor’ as we think just because they live in a caravan we come to an assumption that they have little money. By watching this show we are able to understand that they are very family orientated which is quite a positive thing for them. The weddings give the girls a positive thing for them to look forward to in there lives, this therefore is then giving them something to hold onto to then stay within the culture.
The Mail online published an article in JAN 09 stating that Gypsy camps were found to have ‘frequently cause an increase in crime and mess’, suggesting that it is ‘not racist’ to suggest that this be the case. Which brings up the argument, why isn’t it racist? Why can we say such things and get away with it, but as soon as someone suggests that ‘Polish people’ come and take our jobs it is seen as a ‘Racial outburst’?
there are approximately 300,000 Gypsy/Travellers in Britain today
